Foundation 92 is delighted to share its brand-new Female Football Strategy with the aim of increasing participation in Salford.

The strategy contains three strands that will create a pathway into football for girls.

Phase 1 – Weetabix Wildcats.

Weetabix Wildcats is an England Football initiative, that is a fun way to introduce girls into football. The programme is non-competitive football for girls aged 5 to 11 who want to give football a go for the very first time.

Phase 2 – Squad Girls.

Squad Girls is a fun, non-competitive way to play football locally with friends. Aimed at girls aged 12 to 14 years old, that are either transitioning from Weetabix Wildcats or are wanting to give football a go for the first time. The programme is designed to develop skills and build confidence, whilst encouraging girls to play their way.

Phase 3 – Emerging Talent Centres.

Finally, Emerging Talent Centres are for girls aged 8 to 16, with the aim of sustaining and creating a wider and more diverse talent pool for the game. The talent centres will focus on player development.

Chair of Foundation 92, Yvonne Harrison, said: “This is a huge step forward in helping to grow female football participation in Salford, by creating pathways to play. At Foundation 92 we believe in creating a pathway for girls to begin their football journey with the aim of supporting the local, regional, and national talent pool of future players. With the success and visibility of the Women’s Euros last summer, roles on and off the pitch have a greater profile, encouraging girls and women to play, watch or work in football, and that is something we are also keen to develop. I am delighted that this new strategy will provide girls across Salford with a clear pathway into their footballing future.”

Participants of these phases will develop soft skills such as;

  • Improved confidence.
  • Improved wellbeing.
  • Improved decision making.
  • Improved sense of belonging in the community.
