How a Foundation 92 Financial Literacy Lesson Sparked a Student’s Future Plans

At the start of the year, a quiet Year 10 student at Unsworth Academy had little interest in school, no clear career path, and no understanding of how money worked. “I didn’t see the point in school,” she admitted. “I had no idea what to do after.”

Her teachers noticed she lacked basic financial knowledge and received little guidance at home. Without intervention, she risked leaving school without the skills and confidence needed for independence. That’s when she was nominated to join the F92 Financial Literacy Workshop, in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, a six-week programme designed to empower young people with practical money skills and future planning tools.

At first, she barely engaged, listening quietly while others participated. But during a lively budgeting exercise called Supermarket Sweep, where students planned a week’s meals on a set budget, something clicked. She began asking questions, connecting the lesson to real-life situations. “I didn’t know how much things actually cost or how people planned for it,” she said. “Now I get why it’s important to think ahead.”

By the end of the workshop, her transformation was clear:

  • She built her own realistic mock budget.
  • She identified two career interests — childcare and hairdressing.
  • She set a goal to save £10 per week from her pocket money.
  • She began tracking her spending with a free budgeting app.

Most importantly, her mindset shifted from uncertainty to curiosity and ambition. The student who once doubted the value of school now has a plan, a savings goal, and a vision for her future.

Her journey is a powerful example of how targeted financial education can do more than teach numbers, it can inspire hope, ignite ambition, and open doors to new possibilities. For Foundation 92, it’s proof that early financial literacy isn’t just about money management; it’s about giving young people the confidence to take control of their futures.
