Foundation 92’s Health & Wellbeing team is helping veteran residents at Broughton House stay active, build confidence and improve their wellbeing through twice-weekly accessible fitness sessions.
The sessions are designed to ensure everyone can take part, regardless of mobility level or physical ability. Using a variety of gym equipment, strength exercises and adapted activities, residents are supported to move at their own pace in a welcoming and encouraging environment.
The impact of the sessions can be seen in the progress, determination and enthusiasm of the residents who attend each week.
At 90 years old, Peter is one of the programme’s most dedicated participants. Peter never misses a session and is often waiting outside the gym before it opens, eager to get started on his favourite machine. Over time, he has progressed from seated exercises to standing movements and is always keen to put on the boxing gloves and test his skills. His commitment demonstrates how regular physical activity can help support independence and healthy ageing.
Anne’s journey has been one of growing confidence. When she first joined the sessions, she was unsure about being physically active. Through regular attendance and encouragement, she now moves between exercise stations with increasing confidence and is becoming more comfortable navigating the gym environment. Repetition and routine have also helped Anne become familiar with the exercises, allowing her to participate more independently.
Bob is another familiar face at the sessions, always arriving with a smile. Despite using oxygen carried on his walking frame, Bob independently moves between machines and fully engages in the programme. Since joining, he has improved the mobility and comfort in his right arm through adapted exercises and tailored support, demonstrating that physical challenges do not have to limit participation.
Recently celebrating his 93rd birthday, Jean proves that age is just a number. Initially hesitant about attending the gym, Jean has grown in confidence and now embraces the sessions with a positive attitude. The activities often spark memories and conversations, helping her become more socially engaged while enjoying the physical benefits of regular movement.
New participant Dougie is already experiencing positive changes. Improvements in his balance, lower body strength and mobility have become noticeable after only a short period of attendance. Bringing energy and humour to every session, Dougie can often be heard singing along while proudly showing off his muscles.
Each circuit is designed to ensure exercises can be adapted to suit residents with varying levels of mobility and ability, making the sessions inclusive and accessible for all. Beyond the physical benefits, the programme creates opportunities for social interaction, confidence-building and improved wellbeing.
Through initiatives like these, Foundation 92 continues to support older veterans in staying active, connected and independent, proving that it’s never too late to enjoy the benefits of movement and exercise.
